★WHERE do they stand?
We have a great statue of Buddha in Nara,
about 40 km south from KYOto, while the other in Kamakura, south from
TOkyo nearly in the same distance.
Picture 1 Great Statue of Buddha in Nara
It is about 18 m high, installed inside the wooden building.
Picture 2 Great Stature of Buddha in Kamakura
It is about 13m high, located outsides.
It used to have the housing, which was burnt out in the 15th century.
★WHICH stood earlier?Nara’s one was built in the 8th century while Kamakura’s was in the 13 th century. So the answer is "Nara’s one was earlier by 500 years."

But, please take a close look at the pictures again,
and you will find that they are still sitting (on the lotus leaves). So the answer expected is "EITHER hasn’t stood up yet."Does it make sense?
Children enjoy the riddle among their friends.
★HOW was the height of the statures decided?
It came from a Buddhist sutra, called "Kegon", where it is believed that the statue in the height of ten times bigger than Buddha could make the world completely peaceful and happy. We don't know how tall Buddha was, but the Japanese in the old days are supposed to be around 1.5m high in average.
The effort they made to build such a huge statue must be equivalent to ours to go to the moon.
